Getting Started

Team Requirements


  • Homeschoolers must fish with the public school for which they are zoned. Additional rules apply to private schools. Please contact Josh Williams with homeschool questions. Cell (334)300-4437
  • ASABFA Classic Qualifying Tournaments will begin in October and run through April.
  • ASABFA Classic is held in May.
  • ASABFA will provide a list of eight lakes and dates of the ASABFA Classic Qualifying tournaments. Each team will rank their ASABFA tournament lakes based on their preference. (ASABFA will assign teams six lakes based on availability and team preference.)
  • All teams must fish 4 out of 6 ASABFA assigned lakes to possibly qualify for the ASABFA Classic Tournament. (If the team fishes all 6, the highest 4 scores will be calculated.)
  • Your team must have a minimum of six events for the school year (tournaments, practice tournaments, community service, conservation activities).
  • Monthly team meetings are held throughout the school year. 

Terminology

  • Team: Anyone from your group who is a member of the ASABFA.
  • Individual Boat: A boat captain and two anglers, who are all members of the ASABFA.
  • Angler: A 6-12th-grade student who is a member of ASABFA.
  • Boat Captain: Must be graduated from high school and 18 years of age; must be insured on the boat they are operating in the tournament and be an ASABFA member. Must pass ASABFA background check.
  • Observer: Must be a member of the ASABFA. They must be in or above the 5th. grade. Only one observer may be used per tournament. Their role is to observe during the tournaments and may not fish.
  • Boat/Vessel: 16 feet in length, working live well, working engine kill switch, working lights, min of 40 to max of manufacturer recommended horsepower (see tournament rules).
  • ASABFA State Team of the Year: The team that accumulates the most points for the year on the ASABFA Classic and the ASABFA Classic Qualifiers.
  • ASABFA Classic Champions: Awarded to the top team in the ASABFA Classic two-day tournament.
  • ASABFA Classic 1st Place Boat: Awarded to the top individual boat in the ASABFA Classic two-day senior tournament.

Senior Division Info

Largemouth Classification

  • The Senior Division consists of anglers in grades 6-12. 
  • A minimum of four boats is required, with no maximum limit on the number of boats. 
  • The points earned by a team’s top three boats will be used to calculate the Team of the Year points. 
  • Each team must declare its classification by September 1st. 
  • All students on a team must be enrolled at the same school or at feeder schools that serve the same high school.

Smallmouth Classification

  • The Senior Division consists of anglers in grades 6-12. 
  • A minimum of two boats is required. The maximum number of boats is four.
  • The points earned by a team’s top two boats will be used to calculate the Team of the Year points.
  • Each team must declare its classification by September 1st.
  • All students on a team must be enrolled in the same school or at feeder schools that serve the same high school. 

Junior Division Info

  • The Junior Division is designated for anglers in grades 6-8.
  • Anglers in the 6th - 8th grades have the opportunity to compete in either the Junior or Senior Division; however, once they make their choice, they may only switch divisions once. The second time, they will be classified as senior division anglers.
  • Any angler who participates in more than one event will be classified as a Senior Division angler. 
  • It is essential that all team members are enrolled at the same school or at feeder schools that are affiliated with the same high school.
